My Path to Guardia...Il mio percorso di Guardia ...

VERSIONE ITALIANA SOTTO

Many people are always fascinated by my background. “Oh you’re an opera singer? But you’ve danced professionally and now you’re a chef?!?!” Long story short, yes. All three. But now, I don’t want to tell you the short story, I want to tell you the long story.

With Marcello Giordani
I started performing professionally at the age of ten. By the time I got to high school, my schedule was that of an adult. Wake up at 6am. Go to school. Dance lesson. Voice lessons. Auditions.  Late night rehearsals or performances. I’d get home past midnight, do homework, get a few hours of sleep and then do it all again the next day. But I loved it. I loved performing. I loved singing and dancing and wearing pretty costumes. When I was just 18 I got my big break. I was personally invited by Marcello Giordani, the LEAD tenor of the Metropolitan Opera, to sing as a soloist at the launch of his foundation. I specifically remember reading the e-mail on my phone while sitting in Bryant Park ( in NYC)  waiting to meet my mother. When she called to tell me she was across the street, I practically ran through the cars to tell her the good news. It turned out in that same line-up for this event was David Miller of the hit group, Il Divo and one of my idols growing up, Broadway veteran, Lisa Vroman. To say I was intimidated was an understatement. But I did what I always did. I got up and sang my heart out. Shortly after that, I began lessons with a top voice coach in NYC, who was the coach of Lisa Vroman and many Met artists and who had seen me in the concert. Through that coach, I ended up participating in an Opera Festival on the beautiful island of Ischia, just off the coast of Naples.

This was my first trip to Italy and I could not have been more excited. Through that trip, I gained something I wasn’t originally looking for; a new sense of pride in all things Italian. Suddenly the rest of the world looked different to me.  I came home after three weeks a changed person. Something had clicked. I felt a new passion in everything I saw and somehow wanted to find a way to bring that passion into everyday life, but how?

I returned to my routine in NYC but something wasn’t right. Not only was I different, but I started to realize opera no longer suited me. Opera no longer seemed fun. I didn’t like that I had to dress down for auditions. After all, I’m an artist and the way I dress is just a further extension of who I am. It just started to feel too restrictive for my personality and once you lose passion, what’s the point?

In Ischia, Summer of 2011
A friend told me she was starting an opera/burlesque troupe and asked if I would want to join. I didn’t even need to think about it. I had been dancing since I was five and the chance to combine burlesque and opera just seemed like the perfect fit for me. Finally, I could get away with wearing crazy clothing AND singing. This was my opportunity to get back to performing with passion.

As I started performing more in Burlesque, the opera suddenly took a back seat. After all, burlesque was really a way to express myself through movement and sound. This was the performing that I grew to love. I finally felt that “passion” coming into my everyday life. And in the back of my mind, was always Italy.

When my Burlesque Troupe was featured
in Time Out New York
Though Ischia was a memory from a year earlier, it was there. The culture, the beauty, the history, the architecture, the people, the food, everything. Those three weeks in Ischia changed me. I had always taken great pride in my Italian ancestry, but somehow being in Italy just made my pride stronger. I had always loved cooking, but the food in Italy was a completely new experience and that love for food just blossomed. Now, I turned every meal into a full experience. Even if it was just making myself eggs for breakfast, I looked for ways to bring art and creativity onto the plate. Not only could you see the passion, but you could taste it. As I got more involved in everything Italian, I launched this blog, La Cucina della Prima Donna. This was an outlet for me to talk about my love for all things Italian. As I got more involved in the culinary industry, burlesque was something I did in the evening and opera was no longer in the picture. I wanted to figure out a way to take everything to the next level.

One of the dishes I made in Florence

In the fall of 2013 I decided to go to culinary school in Florence. I wanted to garner some basic techniques of Italian cooking. By this point, I had won numerous recipe contests and had recipes published in cookbooks and magazines, but I wanted to do more and decided to do that in a way that felt completely natural to me…through performance.

Cooking at the James Beard House in NYC
In January of 2014 I launched “Magic & Pasta Events.” After being in Rome in December of 2013, I read a quote in a pizzeria, “Life is a combination of magic and pasta”- Federico Fellini. That’s when it clicked. Fellini had it right. I wanted my life to be a perfect combination of magic and food. This was the way of bringing passion into everyday life…..through magic and pasta (and other foods.) I had the idea of running a secret supper club where cooking was an open experience. I would use an open dining/kitchen space so that guests could see the “magic” behind my creations in the kitchen. Guests could watch and even participate. These would be public events so anyone was welcome and what made these events more “experimental” was that most of the guests would not know each other, but would be seated together at communal tables and therefore, encouraged to interact with each other (After just a little over a year, in March 2015, my supper club ended up on NewYork.com’s 8 Best Supper Clubs in New York, right up there with Gabriele Corcos, of the hit Cooking Channel Show, Extra Virgin.)

Fast forward to May 2014. I was set to go to Florence in the fall and begin my search for an apartment. That’s right. I had decided I would move to Florence. After all, I already had a lot of friends and connections there and I loved it, so where better to begin my life full time in Italy? We were also considering looking for a small house in Le Marche, Puglia or Sala Consilina (where my great grandfather was born). But one day, my mom was watching an episode of House Hunters International and this particular episode took place in Guardia Sanframondi (featuring the lovely artist, Clare Galloway.) My mom thought it seemed like an interesting place and suggested we go to see it. We changed a lot of our plans so that we could add a week in Guardia. We would go to Guardia first to look for a house and then I would head to Florence for two months to do some work and apartment hunt. We arrived in Guardia in October 2014 and I instantly fell in love, but in the six days we were there, I did not find my dream house. When I got to Florence, I immediately missed Guardia. I felt that Guardia was somehow part of my path and now I could not picture myself living anywhere but there. There were so many coincidences that made me think that Guardia was supposed to be where I ended up. The biggest of which, my grandfather was born just two hours away from Guardia in Sala Consilina and the man who ended up selling us our house; his grandfather was born in Sala Consilina as well. To me, being in a town so close to where my family came from was a very special feeling. My plan was always to relocate to Italy, but I never dreamed I would end up being this close to where it all began for my family.

On my balcony in Guardia

In Sala Consilina, Summer 2015
We are responsible for our own decisions but I do believe that our path has been chosen for us, even if we don’t know it yet. Had I not decided to perform in an opera festival in Ischia in the summer of 2011, I might have never gotten over my fear of flying and gotten on that plane and come to Italy. Had I not come to Italy, I might not have reignited the flame for all things Italian. Had I not gone to cooking school in Florence, I might not have decided to open “Magic & Pasta Events.” Had I not lived in Florence briefly, I might have never decided to relocate to Italy permanently. Had my mom not watched House Hunters International, I might not have added Guardia to my itinerary. Had I not come to Guardia, I would most likely be living in Florence right now. And had I not come to Guardia, then I wouldn’t be here typing right now, with the sun shining through my balcony door and with my path full of beautiful, glowing opportunities…

VERSIONE ITALIANA

Ho iniziato a svolgere professionalmente all'età di dieci.

 in Time Out New York

Giusto. Avevo deciso avrei trasferirsi a Firenze.
